4D Column can display two kinds of lists:
Dynamic List
A dynamic lists consists of arrays and or fields directly displayed from its source. For the Dynamic Lists no caching is done, so data is displayed very fast. Because no caching is done, a couple of things are not possible with Dynamic Lists: type-ahead, internal sorting and searching have to be programmed via standard 4D Commands.
Grouped lists
The second form of 4D Column is the fully cached version. This version is meant for selections/list to a couple of thousand rows.
All data is cached, so Type-ahead for any column, sorting for any column, and find in any column can all be handled by 4D Column. All functions can be set on or off on a per column basis.
4D Column Dynamic List display
4D Column dynamic List display enables you to display fields and arrays directly without memory cashing.
This has as biggest advantage that displaying huge amounts of data is done in real time. So opening an output layout-list with 30.000 records takes seconds or less, depending on your hardware/network speed.
All basic functionality is available in the Dynamic version of 4D Column except for Type-ahead, internal sorting and internal searching. Searching and sorting has to be done using the standard commands from 4D. The sorting commands can easily be put inside the Event Handler routine to make the sorting of columns possible.
